Should you buy a Rachio 3 during Napa's Rachio Bonus Week?

The short answer

Yes, if your Napa sprinkler wiring and valves already work and Wi-Fi reaches the wall where the controller hangs. From October 9 to 16, 2026, City of Napa water customers can get a Rachio 3 at 25% off retail through rachio.com/redeem, in 8 or 16 zones, while units last. Fix dead zones and leaks first.

A Rachio 3 is worth buying this week if your sprinkler system already works and only the timer is letting you down. The City of Napa is running a Rachio Bonus Week from October 9 to 16, 2026: its water customers can get a Rachio 3 Smart Sprinkler Controller at 25% off retail, in an 8-zone or 16-zone size, while the limited stock lasts.

A smart controller decides when to water. It can't make a broken valve close or a dead zone come back on. So the useful question isn't really whether a Rachio is good. It's whether your yard is ready for one, and which size to order before the week ends.

What is Napa's Rachio Bonus Week?

The city's Rachio page lists the offer and the steps:

  1. Go to rachio.com/redeem.
  2. Enter your name, email and zip code.
  3. Pick City of Napa from the list.
  4. Choose the 8-zone or the 16-zone controller.
  5. Add the optional Weatherproof Enclosure if the controller will hang outside.
  6. Click Redeem Offer.

The city says a limited number of controllers are available, first come, first served, and its Water Division page lists the bonus as running October 9 to 16. It's for City of Napa water customers. If you live in American Canyon, your water comes from the City of American Canyon, so check whose name is on your bill before you order.

Is a Rachio 3 worth it for a Napa yard?

It is when the schedule is the problem. Rachio's product page lists Rain Skip, which holds off a run after a lot of rain or when rain is expected, and Seasonal Shift, which changes run times with the season. Rachio's support article on its weather features says Seasonal Shift updates a fixed schedule at the start of each month from 10 years of weather records for your area, and that no extra sensors are needed for any of it. The app has no monthly fee, according to the product page.

That matters most right now. A timer still running July's minutes in October is putting down far more than the lawn can use, which is the whole point of our post on how much to cut back sprinklers in October. A controller that shifts on its own each month saves you from doing that by hand three times this fall.

It isn't worth it as a fix for a high bill caused by the field. A leak, a valve that won't close or a broken head wastes water whatever the controller says. If the bill jumped and the schedule hasn't changed, look for the leak first. Our page on irrigation leak detection and repair explains how one gets traced.

Should I get the 8-zone or the 16-zone Rachio 3?

Count the zones you actually use, then leave room for any you plan to add. Open your current controller and look at the numbered station terminals. Each zone has its own wire on its own number. The common wire is shared by every zone and doesn't count, and neither do the two power wires from the plug-in transformer.

| Zones wired to your old controller | Which Rachio 3 to order | | --- | --- | | 1 to 6 | 8-zone, with room to spare | | 7 or 8 | 8-zone fits today, but 16-zone if you plan to split or add zones | | 9 to 16 | 16-zone | | More than 16 | Neither one covers it alone; ask before you buy |

Plans for the yard count too. If you're thinking about Napa's Cash for Grass program, the old lawn zone may become drip, and that can change how many zones you need. Our drip conversion page covers how that usually goes.

One more thing to look for: a wire to a pump or a terminal marked for a master valve or pump start. Rachio's product page says some additional parts may be necessary if you use a pump start relay.

What should I check before I order?

Three things, and each takes a few minutes.

Wi-Fi at the wall. Rachio says you need strong Wi-Fi where the controller will be installed, and the app is needed to connect it. Stand where the old controller hangs, usually inside the garage, with the garage door shut, and load a video on your phone over your home Wi-Fi. If it stalls, the controller will struggle to pull the weather, and the weather is the point of it.

Inside or outside. Rachio's product page says an outdoor installation needs the Weatherproof Enclosure. If your old timer hangs on an outside wall, add the enclosure when you redeem the offer.

Every zone runs today. Rachio and the city both say the install takes 30 minutes or less. That holds when the wires and valves are sound. Before you order, run each zone from the old controller and watch it come on and shut off. A zone that won't start, or one that won't stop, will do exactly the same thing on a brand new Rachio. Our guide to one sprinkler zone not working walks through the usual causes, and a sprinkler system diagnostic tests the controller, field wire, valve, pipe, heads and pressure in that order.

Before you unscrew anything, take a clear photo of the old controller's terminals with every wire still in place.

How do I set a Rachio to follow Napa's watering rules?

Napa's water waste regulations say not to irrigate between 10 am and 5 pm, during rain or within 48 hours after measurable rainfall, or to the point of excessive runoff, and note that some exceptions apply. A smart controller gets you most of the way, but two settings need a person.

Start times. Set each schedule to start early enough that every zone finishes before 10 am, or to start after 5 pm. Early morning is the usual choice. Count the total run time of all zones on the schedule, not just the first one.

Rain. Rachio's support article explains that Rain Skip checks the forecast 12 hours and again 1 hour before a run. It adds up the rain observed in the last 24 hours and the rain forecast for the next 24, and skips if the total passes your threshold. The default threshold is 1/8 inch, and you can lower it to 1/16 inch. Napa's rule covers a longer stretch than that: 48 hours after measurable rain. Rain that ended 30 hours ago has dropped out of Rachio's count, so a run on the second day after a storm can still go ahead. For the first storms of the season, check the app the morning after and stop that day's run yourself if it's still inside the city's 48 hours.

Weather source. The same Rachio article says homes in microclimates can get inaccurate skips on its default Weather Network setting, and lets you choose a specific nearby station instead. If the skips don't match what you see in your own yard, switch to the closest station that reports reliably.

If you booked the city's free home survey, the specialist leaves you a watering schedule. Our post on Napa's free sprinkler inspection covers what that visit includes. Start with those run times and let Seasonal Shift adjust them from there.

Before October 16

Do the zone run first, this weekend, while the offer is still open. It decides everything else.

If a zone is dead, a valve hums but doesn't open, or you'd rather not rewire it yourself, our sprinkler controller replacement work starts with the wires: we test them first, then mount and program the controller zone by zone and run every zone before we leave. We install Rachio and Hunter X2 with Hydrawise controllers. The Napa lawn, sprinkler and lighting page shows what else we look after for homes in town.

Before you call.

  • The City of Napa lists its Rachio Bonus Week as October 9 to 16, 2026. City of Napa water customers can get a Rachio 3 at 25% off retail while the limited number of controllers lasts.

  • Go to rachio.com/redeem, enter your name, email and zip code, and choose City of Napa from the list. Then pick the 8-zone or 16-zone Rachio 3, add the Weatherproof Enclosure if it will hang outside, and click Redeem Offer.

  • Not on its own. Rachio's Rain Skip counts rain observed in the last 24 hours plus rain forecast for the next 24, while the City of Napa bans irrigation within 48 hours after measurable rainfall, so check for a run on the second day after a storm.

  • No. A zone that won't turn on is usually a wiring, solenoid or valve problem, and it behaves the same on a new controller. Test or repair the zone first, then swap the controller.
