Watering rules, rebates, repairs and lighting: plain answers

What homeowners ask us on site: when you can water, which rebates pay, what a repair involves and what goes into a lighting quote.

Watering rules by city

Napa doesn’t allow watering from 10 am to 5 pm, and Fairfield asks you to skip noon to 6 pm. Find your own town’s hours, and its rule for the days after rain.

  • Lawn and irrigation rebates by city

Napa pays $2 a square foot to trade lawn for low-water planting, and Solano’s county water agency $1.50. Apply and get approved before the lawn comes out.

  • Drip vs sprinklers

Keep the lawn on sprinklers. Beds, trees, pots and narrow side strips do better on drip, each on a valve of its own.

  • One sprinkler zone not working

If the other zones still run, the fault sits with that zone alone. Two tests by hand tell you whether it’s yours to fix or a job for a tech.

  • Landscape lighting cost

How many fixtures, the transformer and the cable runs shape a lighting quote. We walk the yard and quote it free.

  • When to aerate and overseed

Aerate in spring. Overseed a fescue lawn here in October, once the September heat has passed, and bermudagrass in late spring.

  • Premium lawn care plan

A mowing visit mows, edges and blows. A care plan also runs the sprinklers, books the seasonal work and sends the same crew each time.
