Drip vs sprinklers: which part of the yard gets which
Eco Scapes·Updated
The short answer
Both, in different places. Lawns get sprinklers, ideally slow rotary nozzles, because the water has to cover every inch evenly. Beds, trees, pots and any strip under 10 feet wide get drip at the roots, on valves of their own, so the water goes where the plants drink instead of onto the walk.
Which part of the yard gets which?

Sprinklers, with rotary nozzles. A lawn needs even coverage, head to head. Rotary nozzles lay the water down slowly, so it soaks in instead of running off.
Drip. Put emitters at each plant, under the mulch, with no overhead spray. Drip conversion
Drip, on a valve of their own. Put emitters around the edge of the canopy, away from the trunk, which should stay dry. Trees get a valve of their own.
Drip or subsurface. Side yards, the gap between a walk and a driveway, and the planter strip by the curb. Spray would only hit the pavement, so these get drip.
Drip. A drip line with an emitter for each pot, on a valve with plants that drink alike.
Nothing. Water that lands here is wasted.
Is drip more efficient than sprinklers?
Yes, because the water lands at the roots instead of in the air, on the walk or in the gutter.
A lot of North Bay ground is clay, which drinks slowly, so spray on a bed mostly runs off. Lawns on clay do best on slow rotary nozzles in short cycles (when to water, by city), and beds get no spray at all. In Fairfield? See sprinkler repair in Fairfield.
Four ways to water
Fixed spray head
A fan of water through the air, 5 to 22 feet.
For small lawn areas; never a bed.
Rotary nozzle
Slow rotating streams from a spray body.
For lawns.
Drip emitter or dripline
Drops at the soil, at each plant.
For beds, trees, pots, strips under 10 ft.
Bubbler
Floods a small basin.
For tree basins, small planters.
Should the lawn go on drip too?
Usually not.
Drip under turf exists, but an open lawn needs water on every inch evenly, and sprinklers do that best. The upgrade there is the nozzle: we swap old heads for Rain Bird bodies with high-efficiency rotary nozzles.
Beds are a different job, and drip only works at the roots. We’ve fixed drip systems that were already in and still losing plants: the tubing sat too far from them and the emitters were the wrong size.

Which rebates need drip?
The lawn-swap programs do. Each pays for lawn you take out and sets what may water the new planting. Drip qualifies in all five.

Every program wants to see the lawn before it comes out, so apply first. You apply to your provider, and we design and install the drip to the program’s terms.

Before you lay drip
It gets by.
It ends up on the lawn’s schedule: short, frequent watering. A mature tree wants deep watering less often, at the edge of its canopy, so it does better on drip on a valve of its own.
Only on new or permitted work.
The state’s no-spray-near-paving rule applies to new landscapes and big redos under a permit. A lawn-swap rebate has its own rule: most programs here don’t allow overhead spray in the new planting.
Not by itself.
It saves water when it’s laid out right: an emitter at each plant, sized to it, and a valve set for drip’s longer runs. A system diagnostic runs and checks every zone.
