When can you water in Napa?

Outside 10 am to 5 pm.

Not during rain, or within 48 hours after measurable rain. Not to the point of runoff. Napa wants leaks of more than a gallon a minute fixed within 30 days of finding them.

Our part

A smart controller is only as good as the zones it runs, so we set one up after checking the heads, valves and pressure behind it. We plan lawn conversions to the city’s terms: plants from the allowed water-use classes and drip under the new beds, installed after the city has seen the lawn.

When does a Napa lawn need the most water?

In September, not July.

Napa’s heat peaks in September, so a timer set in June is set for the wrong month by fall. The city cools toward the bay, where the afternoon sea breeze comes in.

We program schedules zone by zone, and on the smart controllers we install, run times follow the weather inside the city’s allowed hours.

The ground changes every few blocks. Slow soils take water in short cycles with a soak between, which also keeps a yard inside the no-runoff rule; fast-draining ground wants smaller amounts, more often.

A repair starts with a system diagnostic that tests every zone, then replacing the valves that need it with Rain Bird anti-siphon valves and sealed connectors.

Who looks after the yard once the work is done?

Carlos and his crew, on a written plan.

Lawn care & maintenance puts the lawn, the beds and the irrigation under them on one schedule, and what you agree to is written down before work starts. Xiaomeng wrote that …if something changes he always texts you to communicate.

Next door, American Canyon sits in the bay’s cool marine zone. Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga are on the Napa County page.

Before you call.

  • Outside 10 am–5 pm.

The City of Napa bans watering from 10 am to 5 pm, and its water-waste rules also bar watering during rain or within 48 hours after measurable rain, and watering until it runs off. Early-morning runs finish before the ban starts and give the lawn the day to dry. Checked Sep 2026.

  • $2 a sq ft, up to $2,000.

At a single-family home, that cap covers 1,000 square feet of lawn. A rain garden earns $1 more a square foot, outside the cap. The city inspects before and after, and removing the lawn before the Notice to Proceed makes it ineligible. Checked Sep 2026.

  • No.

The City of Napa says replacing lawn with artificial turf does not qualify for Cash for Grass. The new area needs low-water plants covering at least half of it once grown, permeable hardscape on no more than half, and only very-low, low or moderate water-use plants from the state’s plant water-use list.

  • September is the peak.

Napa's heat peaks in September, so a schedule set in early summer runs short. Check for a broken head first, then raise run times outside the 10 am–5 pm ban, or let a weather-based controller adjust.

Green into the fall.
