When to aerate and overseed in Solano, Napa and Sonoma
Eco Scapes·Updated

The short answer
Aerate in spring, while the grass is growing, and again on heavy clay right before fall seeding. Skip summer. Overseed tall fescue and other cool-season lawns in October here, after the September heat. Seed bermudagrass from mid-April to mid-May.
Is my lawn cool-season, warm-season or a mix?
Watch it in winter. A lawn that stays green is cool-season grass. One that turns straw-brown and greens up again in spring is warm-season, or has bermudagrass running through it.
Most lawns here are tall fescue, a cool-season grass that grows in clumps, so a thin patch stays thin until it’s reseeded. Bermudagrass spreads by runners, goes brown in winter and is very hard to get out of a fescue lawn once it’s in.
Pick your area and drag through the year.
Why overseed in October and not September?
Overseed in mid-October, a few days later in Vacaville. September is the classic seeding month, but here it often still feels like summer, and new seed is thirsty.
Until it roots, new seed needs light watering several times a day for a few weeks. With midday watering limits in towns like Napa and Fairfield, that means short morning cycles, which October’s cooler days make far easier to keep up. Seed down by mid-October also comes up well before the first frost.
How the work is done, core by core: aeration and overseeding. Morning cycles set on a smart controller.
Does my lawn need overseeding, or a bigger fix?
If bare patches and weeds cover less than about 40% of the lawn, overseeding brings it back. Past that, it needs a full renovation.
Two problems seed won’t fix. A dry patch that follows a sprinkler’s spray is a coverage problem, so the zones get checked first. And straw-brown patches that come back every winter in a fescue lawn are often bermudagrass going dormant, not dead grass.
I hired Eco Scapes to over seed my lawn and build up the low spots.
Lawn timing questions
In spring.
Aerate while the grass is growing, and skip the summer. Clay lawns, common around here, do better with a second pass in fall, right before overseeding.
Warm-season grass.
Or bermudagrass running through a cool-season lawn. These grasses go dormant in the cold months, roughly December to February inland and a little longer near Napa and Petaluma. They green up again in spring.
Not everywhere.
Some towns limit midday watering: Napa bans it from 10 am to 5 pm, and Fairfield asks you to skip noon to 6 pm. New seed does best with short morning cycles anyway. Every town’s hours are in our watering rules by city guide.
Yes, for winter color.
Overseeding a bermudagrass lawn with a cool-season grass in fall keeps it green through winter, and the bermudagrass takes over again in spring. To seed bermudagrass itself, the window is mid-April to mid-May.
