Core aeration pulls plugs of soil out of a compacted lawn so water, air and roots can get back in. Overseeding puts new seed into those holes to thicken a thin or patchy lawn. On the heavy clay under much of Fairfield, we time both to your town’s heat and your sprinkler schedule.

The aerator pulls plugs 3 to 4 inches deep and leaves them on the lawn to break down. Fairfield’s heavy clay cracks when it dries, swells shut when it’s wet and drinks slowly, so a long sprinkler run sheets off the top. The holes let water and roots back down.
Dry clay won’t give up a full core, so the sprinklers run a few days ahead, and every head gets flagged before the aerator crosses the lawn.

New grass needs mild days to root before winter. Here, September is still hot, so we seed in October, late in the month in Vacaville. Spring is the second chance, and the aerator stays off lawns in summer heat.

New seed needs a careful first month.
Tall fescue, the most common lawn grass in California, grows in bunches and doesn’t spread, so a thin patch stays thin until it’s reseeded. We match the seed to the grass already there. First we find the cause: a patch that follows a sprinkler’s throw gets a system diagnostic before it gets seed. If most of the lawn is bare or weedy, the quote will say it needs a full renovation instead.
Until it roots, new seed needs several short waterings a day: the top inch moist, never soaked. We set those cycles on your controller, inside your town’s watering hours, and walk you through the aftercare before we leave.
