Sprinkler Repair & Landscape Lighting in Petaluma, CA

We repair and install sprinkler, drip and landscape lighting systems in Petaluma, new to us this year. Right now repairs are what we’re scheduling first. We plan each job around the town’s still mornings, the wind that comes off the Gap after lunch and a city code that bans overspray.

When does the wind come up in Petaluma?

Early afternoon, most summer days.

Petaluma sits in the Petaluma Gap, a low break in the coast hills that pulls ocean air inland. Summer mornings are usually calm; by mid-afternoon the wind is up.

Petaluma’s code bans overspray: water landing outside the area being watered. In an afternoon crosswind a spray head waters the driveway.

When we repair a zone here, we also set it to finish in the calm hours and put beds on drip. Spray zones get Rain Bird rotary nozzles, which throw larger drops that hold up better in wind. The Rachio and Hunter Hydrawise controllers we fit adjust run times to the weather on their own.

Petaluma’s water rules, and its free mulch

When can’t you water in Petaluma?

During rain, or for 48 hours after.

LawnSidewalkGutter

Yes, if it’s dry. None falling, none in the last 48 hours, and the water stays on the lawn.

  • No runoff, and no overspray.

Does Petaluma pay to replace a lawn?

Not in cash. It gives the materials instead.

Free materials

Big enough for Mulch Madness: 600 sq ft of lawn.

  • Mulch Madness: compost, cardboard and mulch, delivered free, plus a drip conversion kit for single-family homes.
  • To qualify: at least 500 sq ft of lawn and in-ground irrigation. Step one is a free Water-Wise HouseCall.

Is there a smart-controller rebate? No. The city lists none. Its rebate list covers toilets, clothes washers, pool covers and graywater.

Mulch Madness, on drip

A conversion done to the program’s terms keeps the lawn watered until the city has seen it, caps the old spray heads properly and runs drip where the new plants will go. We plan and install drip conversions.

Repairs first, and new systems when a zone is past patching.

East-side homes mostly sit on heavy clay. It cracks open in a dry August and puddles in January.

On clay like that, a long run puddles or runs off, and runoff breaks the same rule as overspray, so water goes on in short cycles with a soak between. Clay that moves this much also tilts sprinkler heads, sinks valve boxes and pushes light stakes out of aim, so each spring they get checked for level.

An older system can hide patched pipe and wire splices nobody sealed.

A repair here starts with testing every zone, then tracing the leak or replacing the valves that need it. Where a zone has been patched too many times, we rebuild it instead: new wire runs, sealed connectors and Rain Bird valves.

How do you light a Petaluma yard when the fog comes in?

Low, warm and shielded, on an astronomical timer.

Low and shieldedHigh and openFog
Shielded and low against unshielded and high, in fog. A diagram, not a photo.

The Gap that sends the afternoon wind sends fog in on most summer nights. Fog scatters light. A bright, unshielded fixture becomes a haze for you and glare for the neighbor. A fixture set low and aimed at a path, a wall or a trunk reads clean through it.

We fit an astronomical timer: on at dusk, off at the hour you pick, with no reprogramming as sunset moves through the year.

Petaluma’s oldest streets, the Oakhill-Brewster and A Street districts, have their own preservation guidelines for exterior changes. If your home is in one, check them before fixtures go on the front of the house.

Lighting works the same way: repairs first, so dead fixtures, transformer faults and corroded splices come before anything new, then LED upgrades for older halogen systems, then design and new low-voltage installs. On the east side, light stakes go in deep and get re-aimed each fall as the dark hours lengthen.

Cotati and Rohnert Park are the next towns north; Windsor, 23 miles north, has a hotter, stiller summer; all five of our other Sonoma County towns are on the Sonoma County page.

Petaluma questions

  • No, Petaluma is new to us.

Petaluma and the rest of Sonoma County joined our service area in 2026, so this page shows no Petaluma jobs or reviews. Everything we’ve done so far, six-plus years of it, is in Solano and Napa County, and that’s where our Google reviews come from. The city’s rules here come from the city itself.

  • Early, in the calm.

Summer mornings are usually still, and the wind off the Gap builds through the afternoon and blows spray onto pavement. The city bans overspray and runoff, and watering during rain or for 48 hours after it.

  • No cash rebate.

Its rebate list has nothing for controllers, nozzles or lawn removal. For lawns it runs Mulch Madness instead: free mulch, compost, cardboard and a drip conversion kit for homes with at least 500 square feet of watered lawn and in-ground irrigation.

  • No, irrigation and lighting only.
